Mobile plans in Switzerland: how to pick without overpaying
Swiss mobile plans look similar on the surface: “unlimited data”, “5G”, “EU roaming”. The price differences often come from contract terms, activation fees, and how well the plan matches your real routine.
Step 1 - Coverage at your address
In older Zurich buildings, indoor coverage can be the deciding factor. Check coverage where you actually live and work, not where the provider’s ad photo was taken. If your apartment has thick walls, Wi‑Fi calling can matter more than raw speed.
You buy an “unlimited” plan and still miss calls at home. The fix is not always switching providers. First confirm whether your phone supports Wi‑Fi calling, then check router placement and signal areas in the apartment. In some buildings, the difference is one room.
Step 2 - Your real usage
Many expats assume they are “heavy data users” because they commute, but their phone is on Wi‑Fi most of the day. Check your last 30 days usage on your current phone. If you use little data, do not pay for a premium bundle.
Step 3 - Roaming (silent budget killer)
If you cross the border often (weekends in Germany/France/Italy), roaming terms become your real cost driver. Prefer transparent bundles over vague “fair use” marketing.
Step 4 - Contract and cancellation terms
In your first 2–3 months, choose flexibility. Long minimum terms can be fine later, but early on they reduce your ability to react when coverage or routine changes.
